OverviewResearch evidence can be used by community nurses to improve their practice to provide a rationale for programs and projects, and as a basis for claims for financial, personnel and material support. The focus of this chapter is on using research evidence for practice. Links are made between research evidence and existing practice, particularly using research evidence and evaluation data to improve practice. To use research evidence in practice requires community nurses to understand both quantitative and qualitative research methodologies, use critical thinking skills, plan and conduct literature reviews, find evidence in information databases, plan and conduct evaluations of practice, and understand research ethics. Readers wishing to explore research methodologies and methods in more detail are directed to nursing research texts. This chapter will discuss how research can be useful to community nurses to inform evidence-based practice, approaches to evaluation, and strategies for generating an active research culture in community-based health settings.ObjectivesWhen you have read this chapter, you should be able to:
understand the importance of research and how it can contribute to improving community nursing practice;
explore evidence-based approaches in community nursing practice;
identify sources of evidence for community nursing practice;
understand key elements of conducting an evaluation of projects or programs in community-based settings;
