CROSS-CULTURAL SETTING
OverviewCultural diversity in Australia has accelerated the need for the nursing profession to review current practices when caring for people from different cultures. Australia is a complex mix of Indigenous and immigrant groups, who may live anywhere from hectic metropolitan centres to the remote arid lands of central Australia. As a result, management systems need to be developed for crosscultural settings. Health professionals need to consider the cultural impact of their policies and practice for service delivery by considering cultural change, cultural differences, cultural boundaries and cultural safety, so that culturally appropriate and effective health provision is developed and maintained. This chapter considers two main areas: first, the concepts of culture, cultural change, cultural differences and cultural boundaries are discussed, with particular emphasis on the interaction between Indigenous Australian clients and non-Indigenous community nurses; second, two influential cross-cultural nursing models—Leininger's Trans-cultural Nursing model and Ramsden's Cultural Safety model—are described, discussed and compared. To conclude, readers are invited to consider barriers and approaches to providing good health care in cross-cultural settings.ObjectivesWhen you have read this chapter, you should be able to:
discuss the notions of culture and cultural change as they relates to community health;
describe the impact of cultural differences and cultural boundaries in a community health care setting;
