IN COMMUNITY PRACTICE
OverviewThe community nurse works in an independent sole-practitioner role for much of the time, without many of the supports afforded by a formal institutional setting. Consequently, community nurses need to proactively plan for managing their work, and caring for their own needs. This chapter will overview strategies that may assist community nurses to manage their work, careers and personal lives more effectively, with the aim of contributing to more satisfying and productive community nursing roles.St John's (1997) study into community nursing roles in Australia examined how community nurses translated the theoretical and philosophical principles of primary health care into the pragmatics of practice. The strategies identified in this study inform the approaches discussed in this chapter. The chapter focuses on two main areas: an exploration of strategies for managing the work of community nursing; and addressing personal development and self-management issues.ObjectivesWhen you have read this chapter, you should be able to:
overview selected strategies for self-management in community nursing practice;
discuss professional development in community practice;
discuss personal and professional supports in community practice;
identify strategies for promoting community practice roles.
