PROCESS STANDARDS

The first five standards discussed in this book are the NCTM's Content Standards: Numbers and Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability are the mathematical operations that children need to know. These areas contain the facts of mathematics. Learning how to multiply, measure to the quarter inch, or recognize two-dimensional shapes are important skills for kids to understand and be able to use.

The Content Standards, however, would be useless if kids did not know how, when, where, and why to apply them. What is the point of kids knowing how to do long division if they cannot recognize situations when it is appropriate to do so?

For this reason, the last five standards are called Process Standards. These five areas are what children need to do in order to learn to think and reason mathematically. The Process Standards are Problem Solving, Reasoning and Proof, Communication, Connections, and Representation. Each standard will be discussed in depth in the subsequent five chapters.

The format in these last five chapters will differ slightly from the chapters about the Content areas. The NCTM states that only one set of skills applies to pre-kindergarten through fifth grade, instead of having separate skills for primary and upper grades. Of course, the application level of difficulty varies from primary to upper grades. As in the earlier chapters, recommendations for activities or practice strategies will be given for each age group. Although the listed activities have been used previously in the Content chapters, they will now be looked at from a different perspective, revealing how children's learning experiences are multilayered. This will help you understand the aim behind teaching your child the Process Standards.
