Representation

In the broadest sense of the word, representation means anything that brings a picture to the mind—it may be an image, diagram, or drawing; it may be words that depict an idea; or it may be a message made through body language or gestures. Graphical displays and tables are other possibilities. Or a representation could be symbolic—both those invented and the more standard or accepted symbols we all recognize. How many times have you struggled to understand what someone was explaining to you and finally said, [Can you draw a picture of it?] When it was put before you in a graphic sense, it all became clear. We use representations throughout many aspects of our lives. Using representations of all types to express mathematical ideas is at the core of understanding mathematics.

There are three main objectives for elementary students in the use of representations.

Elementary students should develop their ability to create and use repre-
sentations so that they can organize, record, and communicate mathematical
ideas.

The main reason for making representations is so that students can better understand mathematical ideas or more easily solve problems. Representations allow them to get it all out in front of them, so that they can organize their thinking and keep track of what they are doing. It also helps them communicate their solutions or conjectures to someone else.
