Introduction

During any discussion on managing people, there is an inevitable focus on how people work together most effectively. Both leading and team working are pervasive activities in Human Resource Management (HRM) in education, and are part of the process through which successful teaching and learning takes place in educational settings. The prime importance of leadership in creating and maintaining effective schools and colleges is also being given increasing prominence in research, policy and practice. Leadership, of course, cannot be exercised except in relation to the other people in an organization. This book concentrates on the way leadership is practised organizationally and within teams of one sort or another, and how these depend on leadership for their overall effectiveness. Thus the book argues that leadership and team working are at the core of managing people, the most important resource in the whole field of educational management or indeed any other sort of management. The rationale of this book is to give centrality to both topics in a way that practically all existing readers and texts on educational management fail to do.

The interrelatedness, interactions and symbiosis of leadership and teams is crucial. In the last few years we have seen educational management increase in complexity as more and more management activities are devolved to individual institutions. In this climate of multiple changes, more delegation of tasks to individuals and teams within schools and colleges is called for. The importance of leading and team working within educational organizations thus increases. This book takes the view that managers, as never before, need to develop skills both in leading and in being effective members of teams. This could range from leading from within a management team to being a member of a year or course team. All these teams call for effective leading and following at every level. Thus leading is not a one-dimensional activity but a process in which more than one person is engaged, whether this is within a whole organization or specific team setting. Proficient leading and team working is, therefore, central to effective performance within schools and colleges.
