Communication and theory
Communication is an everyday experience which we all claim to know something about but, in fact, is a quite complex activity. Without communication, all that we think of as human experience would cease to exist for it is a vital component of all spheres of life. Management could not take place without communication, and organizations could not exist without it. It is a common complaint within organizations that communications are unsatisfactory and need improving. Mistakes are often made because communication is not seen as a two-way exchange, but as a directive from above, without any consideration of those for whom the communication is intended, or of their views. Negotiation in communication is often vital if the message is to be fully received, accepted by the parties concerned and acted upon. Successful organizations, and schools and colleges are no exception, need good communications. Because so many changes are taking place in educational institutions, effective communication is more than ever critical for their effectiveness. Among the significant changes are:
an increased complexity, both in structure and technology, even in the smallest primary school
the market forces which are operating within education highlight the need for effective communication between the organization and clients (potential and actual) and within the organization itself
Government education and general legislation, e.g. with regard to employment law, has brought about so many changes which require careful communication if misunderstandings are to be avoided and if colleagues are to take Ownership' (if they can!) of such developments
