SIGNIFICANCE: Since the novel Carrie began his career in 1974, Stephen King has become one of the most popular and widely recognized novelists in the world. In the 1980s alone, 7 of the top 25 fiction best sellers were written by him. His books have been translated into nearly every language. Remarkably prolific, by the year 2000 King had averaged more than a book a year for nearly three decades. Most of his novels and many of his short stories have been made into films, and many people know Kings work primarily through the movies. Since the first film based on his work reached the screen in 1976, an average of two or three film adaptations have been released each year.
