Bringing a volume to press requires the help of many people. Jeffrey Brunner and Amy Brown did the editorial work on the volume to put it into the required form for the University of Minnesota Press and to check footnote references. Jonathan Good did the final proofreading and index. Kathryn Reyerson was kind enough to bring her expert knowledge of French legal history to the project by checking the translation of Claude Gauvard's essay. The collection of essays grew out of a conference held by the Center for Medieval Studies at the University of Minnesota in 1995. Funding for the conference came from the College of Liberal Arts and the Frenzel Chair. The editors, Barbara Hanawalt and David Wallace, are grateful for the help they have received in making this volume possible. It is the authors, of course, who did the most work to make the volume a success.
