Biographical Sketches

Many notable leaders have emerged in the field of community service and service-learning. The individuals profiled in this chapter have made outstanding and long-lasting contributions to the field. Although there are many significant people who have been committed and dedicated to promoting community service in the United States, we have chosen a diverse group of individuals to profile. Our group of leaders ranges from politicians and scholars to grass-roots organizers, all of whom share a common thread—a commitment to solving social problems in our communities and our country.

The rationale for youth service and service-learning is often traced back to the writings of philosopher John Dewey, with his work leaving an indelible mark on the field. Educators and scholars, such as Ernest Boyer and Ted Sizer, have been instrumental in recognizing the connection for improving education through student engagement in service. Other scholars, such as Benjamin Barber, have been essential in sparking debate about service and citizenship in a democratic society. In addition, we have recognized a group of researchers the field has grown tremendously through their identification of the benefits and outcomes of service experience and examination of which types of programs seem to be the most effective. The work of these researchers, such as Robert Shumer, Peter Benson, James Youniss, and Dale Blyth, has informed practitioners about the best practices in the field.
