COMMUNITY SERVICE

Community service and volunteerism have been common practices among teenagers and adults in our country for a long period of time. Hundreds of thousands of teenagers and college students, for example, give their time to provide service in activities and organizations such as blood drives, clothing collections, cooking and serving meals, day care, environmental cleanup, charitable fundraisers, crisis hotlines, Meals on Wheels, planting trees, recycling, recreation programs, Special Olympics, tutoring, youth agencies, and coaching youth sports (Cairn & Kielsmeier, 1991), to name just a few. Community service and volunteerism have received much attention in recent years as a result of developments in the field of service-learning.

This chapter provides facts and data from recent major reports and documents on community service and service-learning, including information on levels of participation in service, standards for service-learning, evaluations of service programs, and public and professional attitudes toward service activities. The data presented in this chapter provide valuable information for understanding trends in service participation and for understanding the factors that contribute to successful service programs.
