Glossary

Community service This generally means volunteering in the community or within a school setting, such as tutoring younger children. The focus in on the benefits of the service on the recipients, with little focus on the learning of the service provider. The term has also been used in the criminal justice system, as when an offender is sentenced to some unpaid work in the community in exchange for time in jail.

Corporation for National Service Created in 1993 as part of the National and Community Service Trust Act, this federal agency seeks to increase opportunities for young people and adults to provide service to their communities in the United States.

Experiential education An approach to learning that begins with a reallife experience that is processed in ways that the individual constructs or gains new knowledge or insight. It emphasizes learning by doing. Experiential education includes a number of different teaching and learning activities, including service-learning, internships, outdoor education, and problem-based learning.

Internship An applied experience in which students practice the skills they have learned in the classroom. This is often an essential component of a professional training program in which a professional-intraining practices skills under supervision prior to assuming more responsibility and independence. The goals of internships tend to be professional, in contrast with academic, personal, and civic goals emphasized in service-learning.
