In the fall of 1999, Martha Minow delivered the Gilbane Fund Lectures at Brown University. A symposium on Breaking the Cycles of Hatred: Memory, Law and Repair followed with papers by the authors in this volume and others. Thanks go to the Gilbane Family of Rhode Island, benefactors to Brown University and sponsors of the Gilbane Fund Lectures and to Paul Choquette who served as liaison. Christine Kearney, now on the faculty at the University of Oregon, was program coordinator, and I thank her for her contributions to the success of the event.
