CHAPTER 30 multiple Roles of Nurses
Nursing as a human health service can remain viable and progress in a society only when there are nurses engaged in the fulfilling of professional role responsibilities in nursing. Six roles that are essential for the existence and development of nursing are identified.
1. Practitioner of nursing
2. Nursing theorist
3. Nursing researcher
4. Nursing scholar
5. Developer of nursing technologies and techniques
6. Teacher of nursing or practitioner of nursing education

These six roles are specified as essential because nursing is a distinct health service with its field of knowledge as well as its field of practice, with needs for adequate numbers of persons qualified to practice nursing and fill the other essential roles. Since the administrator roles in nursing services and nursing education are enterprise-derived roles they are not included in this listing of essential professional nursing roles.

Role is used in the sense of kinds of obligations and demands associated with certain social positions or statuses. Some positions, for example, that of university professor, carry with them a number of associated roles, namely, the roles of teacher, scholar, researcher. Another example of multiple roles is that of the high-level technician in a field who is a master of the technology, who keeps up with the latest developments in the sciences underlying it and at the same time is creative and innovative with respect to development of new features of the technology.

This is a working paper prepared circa 1988 as part of extensive consulting being done at the time.
