Self-care deficit nursing theory and the work of Dorothea Orem is having a worldwide impact on nursing. A sampling is presented in this section.
The theory has been found to be helpful to nurses in Australia, Belgium, Canada, Germany, Holland, Japan, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Thailand, and Uruguay, to name some of the countries that we know about. In chapters 39, 40, and 41, nurses from Mexico, Germany, and Thailand share information about the impact of self-care deficit nursing theory on nursing in their countries. As indicated in these papers, although some translations exist, major difficulty in using the theory in non-English-speaking countries is the lack of adequate translations of Orem's writings.
