Recording and Analyzing Group Process
Recording group interactions for study is important for a number of reasons. First, recording the multitude of verbal and nonverbal communications as they occur in a group meeting decreases the chances of omitting important details, since recall of events decreases rapidly with time. Second, recording what happens in the group will allow you to review what happened within and across group sessions. Third, recording group interactions will help you to review group skills, to compare them with those previously demonstrated at other sessions, and to evaluate your progress. Fourth, recording will encourage you to think of what has been said or done in various group interactions, and this will increase the potential for dealing more effectively with similar situations in the future.
RECORDING METHODS
A number of methods can be utilized for recording group interactions for later study. Three of the most useful types of records are the written record, audiotape recordings, and videotape recordings.Some group participants may become anxious when they learn that a permanent record is being made of their behavior. You can usually prevent or decrease such anxiety among group members by:
1. Stating in a positive manner that recordings will be made, (e.g., “I'd like to record what happens in this group so I can learn about how groups work. (Pause.) Any comments?” or, “I'm going to be recording this meeting so I can learn how to be of more help to all of you. Any reactions to this?”)
2. Telling the group members with whom the recording will be shared, (e.g., “I will share the recordings with my in-
