ABRAHAM LINCOLN ON RECONSTRUCTION
With malice toward none, with charity for all, with firmness in the right as God
gives us to see the right, let us strive on to finish the work we are in, to bind up
the nation’s wounds, to care for him who shall have borne the battle and for
his widow and his orphan, to do all which may achieve and cherish a just and
lasting peace among ourselves and with all nations.

I, Abraham Lincoln … do proclaim, declare, and make known to all persons
who have, directly or by implication, participated in the existing rebellion,
except as hereinafter excepted, that a full pardon is hereby granted to them
and each of them with restoration of all rights of property, except as to
slaves … upon the condition that every such person shall take … an oath, and
thenceforward keep and maintain such oath inviolate
