Abstract

Environmental education is a vital tool for environmental management. Although field education has been widely adopted in the Cascadia Region, it remains on the margins of formal education even in such an environmentally aware area. Noteworthy is the near absence of shared environmental educational activities across the boundary, even though the region’s ecosystems crisscross the borderlands and the work of many NGOs and journalists deals with common environmental issues. This paper compares environmental education activities on both sides of the international boundary and explores reasons underlying the current “blockade” of binational educational collaboration. It also profiles one example of international cooperation in environmental education, the Skagit Environmental Endowment Commission.
