This book owes its existence to Kurt Graham, the founding editor of the Papers of William F. Cody and the editor of the book series. Heather Lundine at the University of Nebraska Press saw the value of the original proposal and encouraged publication. The managing editor of the Papers, Jeremy Johnston, provided research support and offered critical insights on portions of the manuscript. The rest of the Papers team at the Buffalo Bill Historical Center, especially assistant editor Linda Clark, provided essential help in locating and identifying documents and reviewing transcriptions. Key members of that team are Gary Boyce and Deb Adams.
I am indebted to various individuals and entities at Brigham Young University who supported research travel to Cody, Wyoming, and London. In addition to a travel grant from BYU’S Kennedy Center for International Studies, I received support from Ed Cutler, chair of the English Department, and john Rosenberg, dean of the College of Humanities. Both department and college also provided research mentoring grants, which gave me the opportunity to work with a number of excellent graduate and undergraduate students on this project. Amy Takabori, Rachel Helps Meibos, and Ben Miller, in particular, conducted research and provided the extra eyes needed to pore over the hundreds of documents located at the McCracken Research
