GREEK, JEWISH, AND ROMAN
THE MILIEU OF THE GOSPELS
Part 2 is a collection of excerpts from a wide variety of religious traditions contemporaneous with early Christianity. The theme of this collection might well be the statement of Justin Martyr quoted in the Introduction, “We (Christians) introduce nothing new (about Jesus Christ) beyond (what the Greeks say) regarding those whom you call sons of Zeus” (above, p. 8). We have broadened the scope somewhat to include Jewish and Roman material as well. Numerous Savior Gods are represented, but also other material. The idea has been to combine the parallels in sections roughly corresponding to the major parts of the gospel narratives in the New Testament.
