GLOSSARY

Abbala Rizaiqat—The camel-herding Arab Rizaiqat tribe that resides in the deserts of northern Darfur. Together with the Baqqara Rizaiqat, they form the second largest tribe in Darfur.

Abyei Border Commission (ABC)—Designated under the Comprehensive Peace Agreement to establish a proper border demarcation of the Abyei region and to resolve some of the outstanding land title disputes between the Dinka and Misiriyya tribes.

African Union (AU)—A regional multilateral organization that promotes cooperation among the independent nations of Africa. The organization’s primary objectives are political and socioeconomic integration; peace and security; and democratic institutions, good governance, and human rights. It is the successor to the Organization for African Unity.

Ansar Army (“The Defenders of Islam”)—The Islamic army led by the Sudanese Islamic mystic called the Mahdi in the late 1800s and his successors in the twentieth century.

Anyanya rebellion—The common term used by southerners to describe the first civil war between the North and South from 1955 to 1972.

Arab Gathering—In Arabic called the Tajamu al Arabi, a pan-Arab supremacist group formed in the 1980s with the backing of the Libyan government and then backed in the 1990s by the Sudanese government, and one of several sources of the Janjawiid militia.
