Measuring Advertising Productivity
The previous chapter focused on the theory of advertising and, in particular, on how the firm should determine its advertising budget. In practice, however, the firm cannot set advertising budgets without being able to measure advertising productivity in the first place. In this chapter, we focus on these measurement issues. Our focus here will be on traditional media such as television and magazines. The measurement of advertising productivity for the Internet and mixedmedia plans—Internet and traditional—will be discussed in chapter 21.We first discuss methods for determining how productive the firm’s aggregate advertising spending is, both in the short run and in the long run. Then, we analyze methods for determining the productivities of different media (e.g., television and print) when the firm uses multiple media. Finally, we show how the firm can use these results to simultaneously determine optimal advertising budgets and media allocation plans.The information covered in this chapter will be useful when you are faced with the following types of decisions:
Should my firm use experiments or historical data to measure advertising productivity?
How should my firm analyze historical sales data to measure short-run and long-run productivity?
How do the data-collection period and accounting methods used by my firm affect the measures of advertising productivity?
