NON-DISCRIMINATION AND
AFFIRMATIVE ACTION
AS A GOVERNMENT CONTRACTOR, you must abide by a strict policy of non-discrimination—and take certain steps to show Uncle Sam that you are an equal opportunity employer. In addition, if your company grows big enough, you must adopt comprehensive affirmative action programs to ensure employment opportunities for members of groups the government considers disadvantaged. This chapter will help you make sure your human resources programs are up to snuff.
Non-Discrimination
It should come as no surprise that the government does not like its contractors to discriminate. As a contractor, your small business is prohibited from discriminating based on eight so-called protected characteristics:
1. Race
2. Color
3. Religion
