Losing a Dream

There are different kinds of pregnancy losses, including failed in vitro fertilization, molar pregnancy, ectopic pregnancy, loss in multiple-gestation pregnancy, abortion, miscarriage, stillbirth, and others that don’t fall easily into one simple category. When the loss is not easily labeled, the family may be left with many unanswered questions. Jonathan Tropper describes it in this way: “It felt strange returning home the next day. We didn’t know how to mourn, how to categorize what we’d lost. Certainly, it had been a traumatic event, but had we lost a baby or a pregnancy?” (2005, p.104).
What is lost? Most people have never given much thought to infertility or miscarriage because, for the most part, our society has been silent on the issue.
