Friedrich Dobe describes how the people of Santorini were much impressed about the work of geologists and their strange instruments:
We visited the fire mountain one day before the arrival of the German ambassador.
Such excursions always created great curiosity among the inhabitants. They watched
us with interest while we carried all kinds of strange instruments over there. When we
came back, they asked apprehensively: “What is the situation? What did you do over
there?” Professor Georgalas answered them, while pointing at a huge drilling machine:
“We gave the mountain an injection so that it is quiet when the ambassador comes
tomorrow”. They smiled sceptically, but full of respect, which changed the next day
into great admiration when the fire mountain obviously became much quieter. The
following day a group of citizens came to Professor Georgalas and asked him whether
he could ordinate such an injection every day! Georgalas promised to do so.
