Teaching Babies to Read

Teaching your young child to read may seem like a daunting task. This program is designed to help you begin the process. It is a combined approach, intermingling sight reading with phonics. If you have decided your child is a candidate for this program, he is likely to be a visual learner and may have a natural sight reading ability. Teaching sight words early will give your child an increased ability to communicate, improve his deficits, and it will provide you with another venue for teaching life concepts. This program teaches phonics alongside sight lessons to ensure that he is getting a strong decoding foundation. Some of the first words you will teach your child will be functional words—words that perhaps a typical child might not learn to read for years. The primary focus is to learn to communicate, so keep that in mind when choosing what tasks to present to him.

I read a variety of books on teaching reading both to typical children and to children with special needs. Then I took my own personal experience and coupled it with the ideas of other parents who have traveled this road to come up with some guiding suggestions. Take what you feel is appropriate for your child. Change what you think you should. Eliminate ideas that don’t match your child’s needs. Every child is truly unique and will learn differently.

I recommend you try the curriculum as early as possible—when your child is young and receptive. If he doesn’t seem ready or responsive, put it away for a while and try again later.
