Glossary

ABA Applied Behavior Analysis. A systematic and individualized program that breaks down skills into small parts, and builds upon them incrementally to teach a child important life skills.

ABLLSThe Assessment of Basic Language and Learning Skills. This is a book by James W. Partington and Mark L. Sundberg (1998) and is an assessment, curriculum guide, and skills tracking system for children with language delays. It contains a task analysis of skills necessary to communicate successfully and be able to learn from everyday experiences.

antecedent Situation that influences behavior. What happens before a behavior occurs.

AVB Applied Verbal Behavior. Focuses on teaching specific components of expressive language first such as mands (requests for wants and needs), tacts (labeling or describing objects), and intraverbals (verbal responses under control of other verbal behavior).

behavior modification (b-mod) To extinguish an undesirable behavior (by removing the reinforcer) and replace it with a desirable behavior by reinforcement.

BIP Behavior Intervention Plan. A behavior plan developed from information obtained after an FBA; should include positive strategies, programs or curricular modifications, and supplementary aids and supports required to address the behaviors of concern.

chaining Breaking down a skill into small units and teaching each separately and linking each unit to the next until the entire skill is mastered.
