Empowering parents

It has been indicated many times in this book that communication between parents and schools is important as it can help to clear up any misunderstanding and help both parents and schools to work collaboratively and positively. In some situations this does not seem to be sufficient and it has been necessary for parents to pursue their legal rights and to take legal action against schools and education departments. It is important therefore that parents are aware of their legal rights. There is now legislation in a number of countries to provide parents with full rights to ensure that the educational needs of their child are met. This chapter will look at the legislation and the practical implications of this for parents. It will begin with a discussion and some guidance on choosing a school, the criteria that may show that a school is dyslexia-friendly and the issues relating to home schooling and inclusion.
