resources and organizations

Each child with dyslexia is unique. This means that the needs, requirements and supports for parents may differ. It is for that reason that local contacts can be extremely valuable. These include local support groups and parents’ associations, as well as the local school. The importance of the local school has been indicated many times throughout this book and the school should be the first line of information. It is very possible however that the school may not have the sources of information and support that are required by parents. The school may find out about recent developments in dyslexia from the parents. That varies, but the power and the influence of parents themselves as a source of information on dyslexia for the school, and other parents, should not be underestimated. The fact a number of teachers are also parents of children with dyslexia is also helpful and usually in cases like that the school will be more informed than usual on dyslexia. Teacher aides and teaching assistants can also be very well informed about dyslexia and some may also be parents of a dyslexic child.
