Two exercises that develop insights into your systems

Exercise 1: Who are you connected to?
At a multidisciplinary or multi-agency team meeting or workshop, ask the members to identify:
a) All the external ‘customers’ of the team and how the team relate to them and identify what service they provide for them.
b) All the internal ‘customers’ of the team and what service they provide for each other and how they communicate with each other.

Draw the networks for all to see.

Though this exercise appears simplistic, it is often the first time that the team members have rationally thought through who all the individuals are that the team network with. Once the networks are identified it is also possible to formulate clearly the services provided across the networks. It will show the complexity of the relationships involved and it is the start of developing a team-based mind map of the networks that the team has. Questions emerge naturally as to how these are to be fostered and developed.


Exercise 2 The “…ing game”

At a team or departmental meeting or workshop ask the members to identify all the processes that occur whilst providing the services for the customers. Ask them to write on ‘post-it notes’ the associated verb of part of that process. An easy way is to remind people that any thing ending in ‘ing’ is part of the process such as assessing, note keeping, treating, discharging, etc. Having brainstormed all the processes in whatever order get them to put the ‘post-it notes’ in the sequence that it is thought they occur. Do not worry if some processes occur at the same time: connect them as parallel lines the ends of which can be drawn to meet at one point.
