Born in Providence, Rhode Island, on January 10, 1949, John P. Baca describes himself as a “problem kid,” frequently appearing before juvenile authorities in the San Diego area where he grew up. Wanting to join the military at the age of 17, he was declared ineligible because he was on parole from the California Youth Authority. His wish came true, however, in 1969, when he was draft ed into the US Army.

Baca’s first unit assignment in Vietnam, just a few months after his induction into the Army, was to a heavy-weapons platoon with Company D, 1st Battalion, 12th Cavalry of the 1st Cavalry Division (Airmobile) operating along the Cambodian border in Phuoc Long Province. As a recoilless rifleman, his job was to use the weapon against enemy troops in bunkers or fortified positions. His job was to support rifle platoons in firefights by providing firepower not normally available to the platoon.

On February 10, 1970, Baca’s unit returned to base after having been in the field for approximately one month. The normal rotation for such a unit would have
