Born on November 14, 1928, Joseph C. Rodriguez was raised in San Bernardino, California. He graduated from San Bernardino Valley College in 1950 with a major in architecture. Rodriguez was working for an architect when he was draft ed in the fall of 1950. He received his basic training at Fort Carson, Colorado, where he was assigned to H Company, 2nd Battalion of the 196th Regimental Combat Team. Upon completion of basic infantry training in February 1951, Private Rodriguez volunteered for duty in the Korean theater of operations. Promoted to private first class, he was deployed overseas with F Company, 17th Infantry Regiment of the 7th Infantry Division.

Part of the 8th Army that was attacked by the combined North Korean and Chinese Communist Forces (CCF) in May 1951, Private Rodriguez’s unit was ordered to capture and occupy the strategic high ground located near the village of Munye-ri, 30 miles north of the 38th Parallel.

Three times, F Company tried to take the high ground, and three times they were repelled. As enemy forces began to roll hand grenades downhill toward the 2nd and 3rd platoons of F Company, Rodriguez took it upon himself to eliminate the enemy positions. He leaped to his feet, ran up the hill a distance of 60 yards, and charged their emplacements, hurling grenades into each of the enemy foxholes, destroying the emplacements and killing 15 enemy soldiers in the process. Rodriguez’s actions had single-handedly broken the enemy defense, and the high ground near the village of Munye-ri was subsequently secured.

Following the battle at Munye-ri, Private Rodriguez was promoted to sergeant. A week later, Rodriguez was hit by small arms fire and evacuated to a hospital in Japan, where he spent three months in rehabilitation. When he finally returned
