Gary George Wetzel, a native of South Milwaukee, Wisconsin, was born on September 9, 1947, as the second oldest of nine children. He enlisted in the US Army in Milwaukee at the age of 18. After attending basic and advanced individual training, he was assigned as an instructor at Fort Leonard Wood in a heavy equipment unit. Wetzel volunteered for assignment to Vietnam and had just turned 19 when he arrived in country in October 1966. He served his first tour with an ordnance unit near Vung Tau.

Wetzel reenlisted in the Army after one year with the hope that someday he would become a helicopter pilot. He served his second tour in Vietnam as a door gunner with the 173rd Assault Helicopter Company (the Robin Hoods), 11th Combined Aviation Battalion, 1st Aviation Brigade, which operated primarily out of Lai Khe in the Iron Triangle region.

As Wetzel’s helicopter approached the hot LZ, it was shot down by a rocket-propelled grenade, marking the fifth time the aircraft in which he was riding had been shot down. Two crew members were lost.

Going to the aid of his wounded pilot, Capt. William F. Dismukes, Wetzel was hit by a grenade; though badly wounded in both arms, left leg, and chest, Wetzel
