CHAPTER 2
Number and Quantity
The first of the six conceptual categories within the Standards for Mathematical Content is Number and Quantity (HSN), which covers concepts about numbers and number systems, and quantities (numbers with units). These concepts are spread through four domains:
The Real Number System (HSN-RN)
Quantities (HSN-Q)
The Complex Number System (HSN-CN)
Vector and Matrix Quantities (HSN-VM)

In this chapter, we’ll look at each of these domains in turn and examine how the content within the domain connects and builds across the standards.


The Real Number System

The standards document’s introduction to the Number and Quantity category makes the point that students have been building their conceptions of numbers and number systems throughout their educational career. The Real Number System is the first of two domains in this category that extends this understanding of number systems.
