Q Tell me about your upcoming show.

A [Jim] Harithas at the Station Museum is giving me a show. I’m always grateful when my work is shown.

Q Are you creating new work specifically for it?

A I can never stop.

Q Never stop. Why is that?

A I’m driven.

Q What drives you?

A Inner spirit. Spirit. That’s the deal. I’m led in everything I do. Everyone would be if they turned within to the Holy Spirit and followed where they were led, which would include not eating animals.

Q Can you go back to when you first discovered you were an artist?

A Well, I just started making things. I think the first thing I ever made was for an attorney. I’d made signs when I was in the dance business working on peoples’ analysis charts. I would spend a lot of time to make them as eye-pleasing as I could. At Dance City—I couldn’t stand to be there—I made a sign that said “Dancing Feet Are Happy Feet,” put it in the teacher’s room, and I left the next day. And then after that I got in a lot of trouble with the police; they had a case against me. And I paid the attorney with a sign I made for him out of antique wood that looked like something out of the western days, that said “Quiet Please, Court In Session.” And I shot bullet holes in it. Never told anybody that before—it just came to me. I wonder where it is.

Q Why did you shoot bullet holes in it?

A To target my resentment against the courts. It was an act of defiance: “Quiet Please Court in Session.” I didn’t
