The conferences that generated most of the chapters in this book, as well the book’s preparation and production, would not have been possible without two generous grants from the American Institutes for Research (AIR).

The editors thank the American Sociological Association’s Section on the Sociology of Education for sponsoring these two conferences at the Association’s annual meetings in 2005 and 2006.
