Contributors

David J. Armor is Professor of Public Policy at George Mason University. He has conducted research and written widely in the fields of education and education reform, school desegregation and related civil rights issues, and military manpower. He has consulted on and testified as an expert witness in more than 40 school desegregation and educational adequacy cases. In 1999 he was appointed to the National Academy of Science Committee on Military Recruiting. He is currently studying the effects of family vs. schools on academic achievement, supported by grants from various organizations.

Andrew A. Beveridge is Professor of Sociology at Queens College and the Graduate School and University of CUNY and chairs the Queens College, Sociology Department. He has published numerous articles and reports, as well as books. Since 1993, he has been a consultant to the New York Times, which has published many news reports and maps based upon his analysis of the Census data. He writes the demographic topic column for the Gotham Gazette, an online publication of the Citizens Union.

George W. Bohrnstedt is Senior Vice President for Research at AIR where he is involved in the development of new programs of research for the organization and brings a deep interest in education policy issues. Formerly, he was the Principal Investigator of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation-funded evaluation of their initiative to create small, personalized high schools and the Coprincipal Investigator of the evaluation of California’s K-3 Class Size reduction program, prior to which he was the Principal Investigator of the evaluation of the College Board’s Equity 2000 initiative. Dr. Bohrnstedt has served as coeditor of the American Sociological Association’s yearbook, Sociological Methodology and also has been editor and coeditor of Sociological Methods and Research and Social Psychology Quarterly.
