Introduction to Part V

The last part of this book covers some wider aspects of being a science teacher. Chapter 23 deals with issues of race, gender and special educational needs. In Chapter 24 we examine the importance of linking science to the everyday lives of our pupils. In particular we examine the educational value of working outside the classroom.

Our final chapter discusses a philosophy for science and the growing awareness of the need for the public to understand science. We re-examine the purpose of an education in science by considering the origins of science teaching in British schools.

Only a few of our pupils and students will go on to have a science-based career but they will all live in an environment increasingly threatened by human activity. It is essential to educate the next generation to understand the need for sustainable development on this planet: our final chapter attempts to show the role that science education can play in this.
