Redesigning a Troubled Workshop While
Teaching It

Wouldn’t it be great if every workshop you led was a roaring success, if every participant wanted to be there, and if every course you taught was welldesigned and a perfect fit for the group? You’ll enjoy that type of experience when leading many workshops.But some courses you lead will undoubtedly be poorly designed. On other occasions, you may have a well-designed course but one that’s not a good fit for the group you’re leading. Later in this chapter we’ll describe a number of other troublesome factors that can undermine the effectiveness of your workshop. Due to factors like these, an important training skill is being adept at revising the workshop design at the same time you are teaching the course. This process is often termed emergent redesign. In this chapter we discuss these issues:
