Adapting the Workshop to Fit the Participants
When you read the title of this appendix, you may wonder why, in a book for trainers, there would be an appendix about rewriting trainer outlines and other workshop materials to make the training a better fit for the intended audience. Isn’t that a function of the workshop development staff? It often is. But in smaller organizations the trainer may need to be a Jack—or Jill—of all trades. And larger organizations often expect their trainers to have some design skills. Also, it’s a natural progression for a trainer to be involved in upgrading training manuals and revising participant materials to make them a better fit for the target population. With firsthand knowledge of what it takes to lead successful workshops, a trainer has much to contribute to improving a workshop’s outcome by adapting the course a bit so it better meets the needs of the participants.After briefly discussing off-the-shelf courses, this appendix focuses on three increasing degrees of adaptation of course content to better suit the sponsoring organization and the user population:
Tailored workshops
Customized workshops
Redesigned workshops

Next, we discuss six guidelines that can help trainers and training administrators determine the appropriate level of workshop adaption for a given situation. Finally, we briefly discuss monogramming a course—making the look of the training materials a good fit with the corporate colors and logo.
