Foundations for Visual
Management

Visual management is a system that helps organizations create and sustain a competitive advantage in two significant ways. First, it ensures that an organization’s internal structure, management systems, work environment, and culture are aligned with its mission and values. Second, it focuses employees’ attention on critical performance goals, making sure that the employees know what is expected of them at all times and are committed to the organization’s success. It is a holistic and systemic approach to the improvement of individual and organizational performance. Visual management works in any well-designed organization that is committed to aligning its operating systems and processes with its mission and goals, and it can be used to strengthen and support this alignment in organizations that are engaged in the design or redesign process.

Visual management is, in many ways, a natural response to the escalating pace of work that has been created by the proliferation of information, as discussed in Chapter 2; to increasing demands for better and faster performance; and to the need to make sense of this in a rapidly changing social context. Today’s business-oriented newspapers, magazines, journals, and books repeatedly tell us that organizations feel pressure to perform exceedingly well in an increasingly complex and dynamic business environment.
