Road Map to Visual
Management—Planning
and Preparation

At this point, you have become familiar with the background of visual management, you understand the foundations supporting this concept, and you have learned what a visual management organization looks like. It is now time to learn how to create a plan for becoming a visual management organization. This chapter and the next provide a road map to guide you through preparation for and achievement of the six phases of visual management planning and implementation. They help you understand what you should do at each step, how to do it, and why you should take that step. Finally, they explain the benefits and expected outcomes of each phase of the visual management process.

As you begin to think about implementing visual management, keep in mind that it utilizes a holistic approach to organization and performance improvement. It relies on the strength of the system design and the competence of the leaders to bring an organization, a company, or a department to a new and higher, more sustainable level of performance. Results are seen very quickly, although this is not an overnight success story. Significant planning, which is the focus of this chapter, and careful attention to implementation, which is the focus of Chapter 6, are necessary to ensure the successful adoption
