LOVE

THERE are many lovers in Plato's dialogues and much talk about love, but hardly a hint of an amorous romance. Love is not depicted as the way of a man with a maid, one of the several things in the world which the Proverbs of Solomon tell us are hard to understand. We are to try initially to understand something which is much harder, the way of men with men and the way of a man with a boy. Maids are excluded. There is a woman, Diotima, but she is wise and evidently old, suited to give instruction, but apparently not suited to give anything else. Socrates may sit admiringly at her feet while she talks of love, and experience no desire to take her in his arms. He is enflamed, however, by the sight of Charmides, a youth.
