NOTES AND ADDITIONAL BIBLIOGRAPHY

PREFACE
1
Of gilded brass, it was made by the famous Sienese goldsmith Tuccio di Sano and his son Giovanni. The same emblem was also painted inside the Palazzo Pubblico, on the wall of the Sala del Mappamondo, by Maestro Battista of Padova.
2
Three copies of this bust exist. One (Plate II) is in the church of Fontegiusta in Siena, one in San Giobbe in Venice, and one in the Convento dell'Osservanza, near Siena. The one at Fontegiusta appears to be the original and is certainly in the best condition.

2. Notes
1
This bell was called after the little city of Sovana in the Maremma from which it had come, when that city was deserted on account of malaria. The bells of Siena played a great part in the city's life: they not only called citizens to prayer, but signalled the beginning and end of the day's work, summoned the fighting men to arms, and called the members of the city council to their meetings. "The bell," said San Bernardino, "is the trumpet of the soul." Falletti-Fossati, Costumi senesi nella seconda metà del secolo XIV, p. 116.
