Notes for The Screens, ( 1961; tr. 1973)
In order to be classified in the Profit or Crime category, a serial murderer must exhibit two characteristics that differentiate her crimes from that of a Black Widow: (1) she must clearly murder for profit, and (2) she must focus her lethal efforts on individuals who are not members of her family. In other words, to meet the criteria for this classification, the serial murderer must be in the business of killing for profit and willing to seek out nonfamily members as victims in order to accomplish her crimes. Finally, she must be willing to undertake her crimes alone and not have been brought into a criminal career by a partner. Therefore, the following definition applies to the Profit or Crime category of serial killer: a woman who systemically murders individuals in the course of other criminal activities, or for profit, but who is not a member of a team of killers.
In many respects, the woman who kills for profit and the Black Widow are similar the their perpetration of serial murder; however, there are also some interesting differences in how these two categories of criminal pursue their felonies. Whereas the Black Widow will focus her lethal activities on family members as primary targets, the Profit or Crime killer consciously establishes herself in the business of murdering for profit and will actively pursue victims
