ALBERT INNAURATO

Albert Innaurato was born in Philadelphia on June 2, 1947. He earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree from the California Institute of the Arts in Los Angeles in 1972 and a Master of Fine Arts degree from the Yale Drama School in 1975. In New York he has been playwright in residence at the Playwrights Horizons Theater, the Public Theater, the Circle Repertory Theatre, and the New York Shakespeare Festival. His first staged play was Urlicht, staged in New Haven, Conn., in 1971 and off-Broadway in New York in 1974. The Transfiguration of Benno Blimpie was also first produced in New Haven in 1973, and then in New York in 1975. Earth Worms premiered in Waterford, Conn. in 1974, and then New York in 1977. Gemini was staged on Broadway in 1976 and ran for three years. Ulysses in Traction was first staged in New York in 1977, followed by Passione in 1980. Coming of Age in Soho was first produced in Seattle, and then offBroadway in New York in 1984. Gus and Al appeared at Playwrights Horizons in New York in 1989.

Innaurato has also written scripts for television. He was an Emmy nominee for Verna: USO Girl, directed by Joseph E. Levine and broadcast on PBS. For Aaron Spelling and Douglas Cramer, Innaurato wrote Coming Out, which was televised on ABC. For Jane Rosenberg he wrote Matter Between Friends, broadcast on CBS, and with Mort Lauchman he wrote Just Plain Folks for Stu Blumberg, Reeves Productions, broadcast on ABC.

DiGaetani: One of the things I like about your plays is the Italian theme you sometimes use. Italian culture has not had much of an effect on serious theater in America.

Innaurato: The basic thing they always say in creative writing courses is "Write about what you know," though I don't think that all my writing is autobiographical or based solely on my own experiences. Nonetheless, I have written my plays especially about what I know, which is basically Italian-American customs in a very Italian-affiliated neigh-
