DAVID IVES

David Ives was born in Chicago and went to college at Northwestern University. He also received an M.F.A. in playwriting in 1984 at the Yale Drama School. His first play, Canvas, was staged in Los Angeles in 1972 under the auspices of an OADR/Rockefeller Foundation grant. The following year, Canvas was presented at the Circle Repertory in New York. Saint Freud appeared at New York's Circle Rep in 1975, followed by Boarders in New York's Academy Arts Theater in 1977. The Conversion was presented at the AMDA Studio Theatre in New York in 1978. Homo Obliteratus was broadcast on National Radio Theater in 1981.

While at Yale Drama School, Ives wrote The Inner Station, performed in 1981; Dark Horse, staged in 1982; and Lives and Deaths of the Great Harry Houdini, 1982.

In 1983 Ives was playwright-in-residence at the Williamstown Theater Festival, where his Lives and Deaths of the Great Harry Houdini was staged. In 1987Words, Words, Words was presented in the Manhattan Punch Line's festival of one-act comedies. The following year the Manhattan Punch Line presented his Sure Thing, while Land of Cockaigne was staged at the Dobama Theater in Cleveland. In 1989Seven Menus appeared in the Manhattan Punch Line's one-act festival. New York also saw Ives' Ancient History that same year, and Speed-the-Play was staged as a Broadway Cares benefit at Lincoln Center. In 1990Philip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread dominated the Manhattan Punch Line's festival of one-act plays and was subsequently presented at Lincoln Center as part of the Serious Fun series. The Los Angeles Theater Center's Festival of New Plays featured Ives' The Red Address in spring 1990. In 1991 his The Secret Garden appeared -- an opera with music by Greg Pliska, staged by the Pennsylvania Opera Theater.

DiGaetani: You got a lot of publicity recently for your Philip Glass Buys a Loaf of Bread, a very clever parody of an opera by Philip Glass.
