CAROLYN SMITH is the director of political operations for ABC News. She joined ABC as an assignment editor in June 1977, after several years in local radio and television news. She holds a B.A. in philosophy from George Washington University and a Ph.D. in rhetoric and philosophy from the University of Pittsburgh.
Ms. Smith was a member of the Harvard Commission on the Presidential News Conference, which issued its report, Reviving the Presidential News Conference, in 1988. She has edited three books on election results for ABC News and has written articles on the rhetoric of John Kennedy and Richard Nixon, as well as articles on presidential press conferences.
Ms. Smith is married and lives in New York. Her husband has been with ABC News for the past thirty years.
