years--that resurfaces in the more competent hands of the master and seems to constitute an important part of the thrill of the creative life. Childhood creativity is not equivalent to the creativity of the master--but it is difficult to envisage the possibility of adult creativity without the experience of childhood. In this sense, it is fitting that our modest study of creativity has focused on two individuals who have helped to form the sensibility of our time: Sigmund Freud, who first underscored the extent to which later mental life is dictated by the experiences of childhood, and Pablo Picasso, whose work had such deep links to the simple forms favored in childhood and who recognized the deep truth, "Once I drew like Raphael but it has taken me a whole life to learn to draw like a child" (quoted in de Meredieu 1974, p. 13).
