Finding the time, energy, and ideal situation for writing this book would not have been possible without the support of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev in Israel for a sabbatical year in the United States. For providing an affiliation with the Sociology Department of the University of California at San Diego I have Professor Joseph Gusfield to thank. Joe also uses a dramaturgical perspective for the analysis of social behavior and is thus aware of the marked influence of the setting on social interaction. Professor Roland Tharp, while he was Dean of the School of Human Behavior at the United States International University, suggested that I teach a graduate course on "team building." This provided an incentive to read the team building literature, which was new to me, and to write a first draft of the present book as a set of notes for the students in the course. Feedback from the students indicated that the topics covered in the course were important for persons who planned to be organizational consultants.

The idea that I should once more attempt to show the relationship between the various theories with which I had been working was the result of a series of lectures that I was asked to give at three Polish universities in November 1989. For this opportunity I thank Professor Jacek Szmatka of the Jagiellonian University in Krakow. For bringing me up to date on the social-psychological literature on small groups I am indebted to Herbert Blumberg, Martin Davies, and Valerie Kent, of Goldsmiths College, London, who joined me in the review of the literature that resulted in our handbook on small group research. Over the years Dean Peabody always has been ready to discuss social-psychological issues and to give me the benefit of his encyclopedic knowledge of psychology and many fields and periods of history.
